"This year I found myself with a cluster of injuries that made walking and use of my hands painful. Unable to work in my accustomed way, I tried to find other methods of expression. I was using the dictation app on my laptop to write stories and became interested in the ways the computer sometimes misinterpreted what I said. Deciding to embrace this flaw as an opportunity to collaborate with the god in the machine, I began to speak in a mix of nonsense language and short discernible phrases, letting the computer interpret them into English. The result has been an intriguing view into the program’s mind that reads like a slightly musical surreally unexpert poetry slam/nursery rhyme. I wonder, how much of the translation is the machine’s own creative expression and how much of it is the machine interpreting the subtext of my absurd utterances to reveal my deepest thoughts and feelings, unknown even to me. And if this is the case, am I getting the message?"
