On the occasion of Milkweed, an exhibition of hanging sculptures by Bay Area-based artist Vanesa Gingold in /room/, we invite you to an online conversation between Vanesa Gingold and Jenni Sorkin, Professor of History of Art & Architecture at the University of California, Santa Barbara, who writes on the intersections of gender, material culture, and contemporary art. The two will discuss Gingold’s most recent body of work, currently on view in /room/, and how it relates to slowing down, care work, symbiosis and transformation.
Vanesa Gingold was born in Ukiah, CA and lives and works in Oakland, CA. Gingold received her MFA from UC Santa Barbara and degrees in Art and Psychology from UC Davis. Vanesa has worked with numerous galleries, museums and organizations, including the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, Creativity Explored, San Francisco Arts Commission, SF City College and the University of California as an artist, curator, and teacher.
Jenni Sorkin is Professor of History of Art & Architecture at the University of California, Santa Barbara, where she is also Affiliated Faculty in the Departments of Art, Feminist Studies, and History. She writes on the intersections between gender, material culture, and contemporary art, working primarily on women artists and underrepresented media. Her books include Live Form: Women, Ceramics and Community (University of Chicago Press, 2016), Revolution in the Making: Abstract Sculpture by Women Artists, 1947–2016 (Skira, 2016), and Art in California (Thames & Hudson, 2021).
