Beril Or
February 16 – March 18, 2023
Reception: Saturday, March 4 | 4 to 6pm
An exhibition of drawings by Beril Or in /room/, juried by Micki Meng and Nkiruka Oparah.
hiç is an exhibition of drawings by Beril Or. Using an embossing tool, the artist traces the outline of a rock. The etched line marks an absence. For Or, the traced shape connects to a search for a memory that was forgotten a long time ago. Her process explores the weight of forgetting and the weight of remembering, the effects of hiding, escaping, or healing from memory and trauma. Rocks hold records of the earth’s memory and Or is interested in how time affects memory and how memories can gradually change form or disappear. Beril Or began working on the series of traced rocks using an embossing tool in 2021. For her exhibition in /room/, one work from the series will occupy the space at a time and, each week, one drawing will replace another.
Beril Or’s interdisciplinary works explore memory, trauma, and healing and move between comfort and disturbance. She has shown in galleries such as SOMArts, Root Division, Berkeley Art Center, Palo Alto Art Center, ICASF, and SOEX. In 2009 she received the State Contemporary Artist Award in Turkey and in 2019 the Cadogan Contemporary Art Award, among others. Beril holds an MFA in Art Practice from San Francisco State University and BFA in Sculpture from Hacettepe University.
